Defining Religion

Hanukkah

Day 91 prompt: Religion

Today’s poem will be about religion,
I said.

I don’t even know what that is,
my seven-year-old replied.

I thought.

Tired,
I looked up a dictionary definition.
To explain, I needed larger,
more unfamiliar terms
than the word itself.

While I struggled to communicate,
my nine-year-old chimed in.

You know how at school,
some people celebrate Christmas?
But others have Hanukah,
Kwanzaa or Diwali.

Oh. Okay.

And that was enough.
