A Reader’s Story

Day 5 prompt: warped

Summer’s best fiction
In mid-day sun
Prescription sunglasses
Tame tiny black characters
On bright white paper
I am silent
Enveloped by words
Pages piling left of spine
At story’s climax
Pupils widen to shadows
Glasses move scalpward
Polka dots clutter my story
Small and scattered first
Then large and overlapping
Boom, flash, downpour
Startled, I escape indoors
Plot and protagonist left bathing

Next day’s early warmth
Summons me out
For patio discovery
Summer’s best fiction
But not unwritten
By afternoon rain
