a simple calculation

the title passed
occasionally
but not often
usually due not to some violation
but to shifting classroom assignments

teenage best friendships
still one at a time
but unbound by home rooms
and enabled by driver’s licenses
and minimum wage
stuck even longer
but ripped apart
with greater force
leaving the raw sting
of betrayal and rejection

in adulthood
best friend
is a title reserved
for not just one
but any rare relationship
that endures
the truths and tests
of grown-up life

a gift
and a challenge
at any age
