my mom chose an Avocado stove

not to go with her stoneware
or to accentuate a stripe
in the café curtain above the sink

but because it was a close-out

making way for white,
the appliance guy discounted
all things Avocado
and Harvest Gold

I was embarrassed

why couldn’t we get white
like everyone else?
