Pregnant Pause

A pregnant woman

Day 260 prompt: Barren

first time

so easy
I swear
we shared
playful winks
and he
arrived

but then

a roller coaster
of plus signs
on plastic sticks
followed by
tinges
of crushing crimson
budding lives lost
to unknown
causes
without remedy
three times

and so

late
once again
I predicted
another loss
ever searching
the cotton cloth
down there
for scarlet
failure

even when

swollen large
feet in stirrups
screaming in pain
ordered to push
I anticipated
silent stillness

at last

many eyes fixed
down there
one more push
pressure released
silent moment
broken
long-awaited wailing
and my own
bawling
to doctor’s words

it’s a girl

  1. This brought tears to my eyes–in a good way. 🙂 You are a gifted writer my friend. Thanks for sharing this special moment.

    • Vicki, thank you so very much! I’m gaining courage to share more honesty in these poems. The positive response from you and others makes it much easier to stretch out into more challenging territory.
