Use a disposable plastic bag to create something new.
While transforming a grocery bag into a lovely flower, I found myself engaged in the process. First cutting and folding the bag, then twisting and pulling the petals. The work was simple, but did take time, two hands, and the focus of both eyes. Still, parts of me were free for other diversions. I could walk from room to room, listen to conversations.
And I could think.
Now on my 57th day of making things, I can say with certainty that these daily, creative exercises have gifted me with mental space. Time for focus, clear thoughts, gratitude, imaginative ideas. Not quite prayer, but almost.
“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning
can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day—
like writing a poem or saying a prayer.”
