I like to say
I am who I am

that what you see
is what you get

and yet

what you see
at dawn
is different
from what emerges
by ten
or noon
or dusk
or midnight

so
let me say this
instead

what you see—
this morning’s bed head
and yesterday’s faded mascara—
may not
have caught up
with the ideas
and energy
of who I am

and vice versa

who I am—
this morning’s lost keys
and yesterday’s frantic meltdown—
may not be
as assembled
as the ruffled scarf
and low-heeled boots
you see
