Today’s make something prompt was to invent a sport and convince others to play it with me. I spent my day teaching a business writing workshop … not exactly the perfect environment for inventing a physical, competitive game.
So this evening I’m returning to poetry, which has become my trusted canvas when other means of creative delivery seem out of reach.
Ideal Sport
co-ed teams
just five
players each
meet
in short matches
just three
five-minute periods
per game
no equipment
burdens or protects
the competitors
they need only
athleticism
balance, agility, speed
and intellect
intuition, communication, wit
contests take place
indoors or out
with or without
coaches
scoreboard
officials
no professional league
or corporate sponsor
capitalizes
on competitors
or fans
people
play
watch
train
aspire
cheer
simply because
they
enjoy
the game
